Last week, President Donald Trump approved federal disaster assistance funding for Upshur, Barbour, Randolph, Tucker and seven other counties, through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Public Assistance program.
The funds will go toward repairing public infrastructure after the deadly flooding of July 21.
Federal Individual Assistance was previously approved for Upshur, Lewis, Pleasants and Ritchie counties following the July storms. Individual Assistance can help eligible residents with temporary housing, home repairs and other uninsured or underinsured disaster-related losses.
Earlier this month, Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced that the deadline for federal disaster assistance for Upshur and Lewis County residents impacted by the July 21 deadly flooding had been extended to today.Morrisey's request for a two-week extension of the application deadline was approved by FEMA.
Any resident of the two counties who was affected by the July flooding is asked to apply for federal disaster assistance. Residents can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov, through the FEMA App, by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362, or by visiting a Disaster Recovery Center. The FEMA Helpline provides assistance in multiple languages.
Disaster Recovery Centers in Lewis and Upshur counties will remain open through today to provide in-person assistance. They will be open today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Upshur County Development Authority and the former Summit Center in Weston.
The July 21 flooding caused great devastation in our area. Two Upshur residents lost their lives in the flooding. In Upshur and Lewis counties alone, 33 homes were destroyed, with 91 other homes experiencing major damage, 235 with minor damage, and 182 otherwise impacted.
The federal government has deemed the situation worthy of disaster assistance funding, so we urge everyone who was impacted by the flooding and has not yet applied to do so today, before the window of opportunity closes.
