West Virginia drivers have known for years that when they see an emergency or other vehicle at the side of the road with flashing lights, they are to move over and slow down. Disasters near and far have deepened the desire in many to help — to somehow do something amid all this suffering and struggle. In many of the hardest hit places, the American Red Cross is helping — and if we can’t be involved in those direct efforts, we can certainly do something to help that organization fulfill its mission. As anyone who happened to be in Elkins last Friday afternoon or evening would surely attest, the city had a big turnout for this year’s Fourth of July celebration. The fun, family friendly activities began with the first-ever July 4th Parade organized by Citizens Promoting Community. The parade kicked off at 5 p.m., running from the intersection of 11th Street and South Davis Avenue, and ending at City Hall. Julie Jargon’s Family & Tech column on the Personal Journal page of the June 9 Wall Street Journal focused on “sextortion” scams involving Apple Messages that ended in tragedy. She wrote that in 2024, more than 5,000 sextortion cases were reported by the public to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and to Thorn, a child-safety nonprofit.
