Church Women United increases donations to local nonprofits
The Elkins Area Church Women United has great news to share despite the current uncertainty of the pandemic.
We would like to inform everyone of our continuing support within our Elkins area community. In the past, we have provided yearly monetary donations to several different local nonprofit agencies through our Holy Week Lenten luncheons supported by 17 different local churches.
This year the community was not able to worship and lunch together during Holy Week, so we worried how we could continue to support these different agencies without the luncheon donations. Jane Hazer, our local president, put out a plea for the churches to consider donating the cost they would have had in providing the luncheons. Our church women were so very generous with their monetary support that we are not only able to continue our annual support but we increased our gifts from $100 to each organization to $150.
This activity has been Elkins Area Church Women United’s only fundraiser to help local non-profit organizations or projects. The ladies recently had a conference call and made the decision to continue our tradition to support fourteen different agencies with a gift of $150. We received both individual donations and church donations that supported our mission this year. We want to recognize all the different churches who have participated and give them a big shout-out of thank you and alleluia.
Those churches helping are First United Methodist Church; Mercy Chapel Church; Orlena United Methodist Church; Wayside United Methodist Church; Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church; Saint Brendan Catholic Church; Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; First Baptist Church; First Church of Christ; Otterbein United Methodist Church; Israel United Methodist Church; Elkins Church of God; Church of the Brethren; Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church; Grace Episcopal Church; New Era Christian Academy and Good Shepherd Assembly of God; and Elkins Church of Nazarene.
We would like to recognize the 14 local community agencies we are supporting this year. They are: Helping Hand – Good Shepherd; Mountain Hospice Corp.; Centers Against Violence (WAIC); Randolph County Homeless Shelter; Randolph County Meals on Wheels; Catholic Charities of WV; Back Pack Project of First United Methodist Church; Common Grounds of Woodford United Methodist Church; Tyrand Coop Ministries Inc.; Youth Health Service; Randolph County Senior Center; Randolph County Coalition of Christian Churches; WV Caring; and Children Advocacy Center.
Please know we could not have accomplished this without everyone’s support both in the past and recently. We hope to work with you in 2021 during Holy Week for this important project. May God continue to bless each of you in these changing and challenging times. You are truly a blessing to your church and community.
Jane Hazer, President
