I hope your readers caught Gov. Jim Justice's State of the State address Thursday evening. It was positive, humorous and entertaining and an extremely pro-West Virginia speech!
In some ways it reminded me of our former state Secretary of State, A. James Manchin (the uncle of our current U.S. Senator), who I served with at one time in the WV House of Delegates. Say what you will about A. James, but he was flamboyant, colorful and a strong supporter of West Virginia, regularly defending our state against the arrogant wealthy who try to put the state down to show their supposed superiority to "poor, illiterate" West Virginians.
Whenever anyone made negative comments about West Virginia, A. James was there, going on the offensive to defend our honor, our state's work ethic, our values, and traditions.
I couldn't help but enjoy Jim Justice taking on the left-wing Hollywood elite as they tried to belittle West Virginia. The arrogant wealthy like Bette Midler have no awareness of our state and our people.
Our governor used humor and common sense in responding to Midler. He was not shy about taking on the disaster occurring in Washington, D.C., like A. James would have done if he were still alive.
