West Virginia needs true equality in the classroom.
We can all agree that racism and discrimination are wrong and have no place in the classroom, but neither does racially motivated propaganda.
I've historically been critical of misleading positions from Socialist Democrats.
A recent letter to the editor raising a controversy over West Virginia's legislature's push to ban the teaching of critical race theory (CRT) and associated ideologies in our public education system prompts this response.
First, I feel there's good reason to fear this new trend in education. And second, I worry that the left has engaged in misleading discourse as part of this debate.
For months, West Virginians have been hearing alarms about Socialist Democrats' effort to brainwash our children by injecting CRT into public school curriculum. And it has begun to creep into our public education system.
CRT is a way to shape public policy that pits people of color against white people.
Although promoted as anti-racist civil rights education, CRT actively encourages discrimination. At its core, CRT segregates people into two main categories: oppressors or victims. A calculation that is based solely on skin color.
In some classrooms across America, students are being taught that finding the right answer in mathematics is racist and right or wrong answers are deemed a product of white supremacy.
To say that this destructive ideology didn't pose such a danger to education in America, requires a great deal of gymnastics and would be amusing if it didn't pose such a danger to education.
In West Virginia, we see opposition to CRT coming straight from many parents and some educators. In response, the West Virginia State Legislature is proposing a bill banning CRT in schools. Parents must stand firm with our Legislature at the local level.
Children should not be forced to endure this latest round of revisionist history, but it will take more than letters and legislation to keep CRT out of the classroom. Parents need to show up to school board meetings and report discriminatory conduct.
The last thing West Virginia educators should be doing is encouraging our children to be ashamed of the color of their skin. While parents struggle to help their children manage the mental and emotional damage inflicted by this dangerous ideology, the left will continue to re-write our education system to fit their agenda and they won't stop until CRT is in every classroom in America. Parents must gladly stand with our legislature to demand an end to this latest, unhinged attempt to brainwash our children.
In short, CRT has limited value and is enormously difficult to understand (let alone teach) by instructors not versed in legal theory and civil rights legislation.
The proponents of Critical Race Theory offer no vision. They only propose a world of endless grievances and revenge, petty cons and abusing their power to ruin lives.
