Group focusing on downtown revitalization
A grass roots group called Citizens for Downtown Development is taking focus on the revitalization of downtown. There are many steps along the path to build Elkins into what we all know it can be and we believe the next step is the proper planning and development of the Railyard.
Twenty years ago, the development of the Railyard was created with the intentions of becoming a tourism destination and the center of development for Elkins and this part of the state. That group is thankful and supportive of the RCDA’s current plan to continue to turn that vision into a reality. The RCDA’s plans of a multi use event center is the stimulus that is needed for the Downtown area. Properly planned and developed, the Railyard can shape Elkins for generations. The attractions in our Railyard attract thousands of tourists each year, and an event center will attract thousands more. An investment in our Railyard and tourism will pay dividends and enrich lives for decades.
There are many attractions in and around Elkins. Mountains, ski resorts, streams and trails for outdoor enthusiasts. Augusta, The Old Brick, The Arts Center and Gandy Dancer Theatre, cultural tourists. Mountain Rails, Beverly Heritage Center, Sturrup Gallery for history buffs. The common thread in all these is that they are experiential and that must built on. A Railyard event center will provide a unique experience for tourists and locals alike. The multi-use event center being planned by the RCDA will be a boon for tourism and cultural events. A place where shows, pageants, events, conferences and festivals all can take place.
This vision must be allowed to blossom. The Railyard is an incredible asset, and changes must be planned carefully. There are many businesses that could “fit” in the Railyard. Still, additions must create a symbiosis with our downtown. Suppose we can provide something that will attract more people. In that case, there will be a need for the further economic development of the downtown. We have empty storefronts to fill those needs.
This growth will take years to cultivate and as growth occurs, new potential will arise. We encourage the RCDA to continue their strategic development of the Railyard for the future benefit of Elkins and we offer our full support. Our group encourages community involvement. Please contact Dr. Weese or Craig Fortney at the Holiday Inn Express if you would like to be involved and express your opinion.
