The "Respect for Marriage Act" threatens America's most basic freedom and disrespects marriage by changing its meaning with the full force of the Democrats in Congress.
The Respect for Marriage Act completely destroys the understanding of marriage while sparking increased legal battles for Christians.
Nowhere in the bill do the terms conjugal marriage, traditional marriage, biological marriage, biblical marriage, natural marriage, historical marriage, husband-wife marriage, man-woman marriage, or any other possible variation appear.
Yet the bill does say some things quite clear and explicit such as, same-sex couples deserve to have the dignity, stability and ongoing protection that marriage affords to families and children. Now a statement like that took some real legal work.
This act empowers the federal government with broad new powers to go after people of faith, faith-based organizations and others that hold traditional biblically based views about marriage, and punish organizations and people that hold those views.
Let me begin with some background thoughts of this bill. After the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, liberals began to fear that the Supreme Court would overrule similar patently unconstitutional decisions. The Democrats wanted to take some action to ensure that gay marriage remained legal, even if overruled by the Supreme Court.
Thus, the Respect for Marriage Act was born.
Question one, who is bound by this bill? This bill prohibits any person operating under the color of state law from denying full faith and credit to any public act, record or judicial proceeding concerning gay marriage. That language, under the color of State law, refers to public officials executing state law. Also this bill appears to apply to churches, Christian schools, Christian small-business owners who cater to the wedding industry, or the like.
This Respect for Marriage Act forces Christians to bow the knee or face the fiery furnace.
"Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people," Proverbs 14:34. Since our nation is hurting badly, spitting in the face of God is an exceptionally stupid move. If we have any hope of being fixed, we need to start with repentance.
It's time we took a stand. Millions of us have got to speak up and say, we'll give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, never to Caesar what belongs to God.
