As most readers know, the week of June 24-30, over 1,000 individuals from across the U.S. and around the world converged on Randolph County for the National Speleological Society's nation conference.
I would like to thank Davis & Elkins College, Elkins Main Street, the Chamber of Commerce, the Monongahela National Forest, the City and County for helping to plan and host the largest conference to ever come to Elkins. All these groups were gracious partners involved in two years of planning for this successful event.
While spending time with these cavers, I heard a common theme in all our conversations. "We are amazed at how welcoming and helpful the people are here." "The people are so nice that we plan to return for a vacation soon."
They commented on shop owners, restaurant workers, hotel and campground hosts, train rides and museums and the beauty of the land -- and they were all positive remarks!
So, the main reason for writing this letter is to thank you, the community of Randolph County, for making this event a success. The NSS's organizers recognize the arduous work of the partners I've mentioned, the participants remember you, the people that made them feel welcome and appreciated.
Those of us in tourism know the beauty of Randolph County draws people here, but the hospitality you showed this group is what will bring them back.
