A reader’s plan to raise funds for EHS

2 min read

I am writing this letter to suggest to Elkins High School alumni and other supporters of the youth of Elkins how we can raise thousands of dollars a year to support the EHS Alumni Association, and it will only cost an individual $10 a year.

I read in The Inter-Mountain recently that the EHSAA is down to a total of 10 members. I thought about how we can improve this, especially since the EHSAA exists to help support students at EHS. Not only does the EHSAA exist for EHS alumni, but anyone wishing to support students at the high school can join the association, and membership is only $10 a year.

Now I will explain how we can raise thousands of dollars a year to support our students. I checked the number of graduates from EHS classes from 1996 to 2006. The number was a high of 225 in 1996, to a low of 182 in 2004. Therefore, I looked at this idea: "If we could recruit 10 alumni a year from 1975 to 2015, how much money would that generate a year?" The answer is $4,000 per year.

Follow the math. If we recruit 10 members a year at $10 each, that would equal $100 per year. For the period 1975 to 2014, that would equal 400 members times $10 each, that would equal $4,000 per year that could be used to support student activities, like sporting activities, music and art activities, student travel, etc.

Therefore, I ask you to think about encouraging classmates, relatives, parents of current students at EHS to consider joining the EHS Alumni Association, because their $10 dues could help provide thousands of dollars of support to the EHS students.

I apologize if my letter is too lengthy, but I have parents, relatives, children and friends who attended and are graduates of Elkins High School. Consequently, I want to continue my support of the EHS students through the continued efforts of the EHSAA.

Thank you to all for your support, and "Go Tigers."
