Since the passage of HB 3293 some three years ago, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has been in numerous court battles defending this bill, the latest an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court (The Inter-Mountain 7-15-24).
Fighting the bill is Lambda Legal, the state chapter of the ACLU (or as I refer to it as "American Civil Liberties Up-yours"!)
West Virginia House of Delegates District 67 encompasses the western half of Pendleton County, and in Randolph County, most of Elkins, north to the Tucker County lline and east to Pendleton County. Republican Elias Coop-Gonzalez was elected in 2022, ousting Democrat transgender supporter Cody Thompson.
During the 2021 regular session, HB 3293 was passed. The bill, in summary, states that at the time of enrollment in sports, the sex on the birth certificate determines what single sports the student can participate in, defining male and female-based solely on the individual's reproductive biology and genetics at birth. Simply stated, born a boy, boy sports, born a girl, girl sports.
The vote was partisan, with Republicans voting for the bill and Democrats, including then-Delegate Cody Thompson, voted against the bill.
Quoting Thompson from a 3-28-21 article in The Inter-Mountain, "I'm personally appalled and disgusted that a little girl could potentially have to show a stranger her genitalia to prove what sex organs she has. Would you feel comfortable with your daughter, trans or not, being subjected to that? I wouldn't, it's disgusting!"
With the the General Election quickly approaching, yard signs are, once again, popping up on lawns like dandelions! And one can assume that the names on the signs are the candidates supported by the property owner.
So say, for instance, the candidate is a proponent of open borders, illegals being able to vote, males who "identify" as female allowed in girls dressing rooms, etc… does that mean you, as the property owner displaying the yard signs, are also a supporter of these policies? Sure looks like it to your neighbors and passersby.
In closing, to paraphrase one of the oldest published quotes that first appeared in the Washington Post in November 1985, to Vice President Dick Cheney at a 2004 Bush re-election campaign rally in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Iowa in October 2007, when Senator John McCain used the popular expression to criticize Hillary Clinton's revamped health care plan, "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig."
