The very identity of the Harman community has been shaped around its elementary/high school. Parents, students and alumni have dedicated significant time, funds and efforts toward the betterment of this school, staging fundraisers and engaging in lifelong volunteer work to ensure our children have access to quality education, right here in our community.
The school stands as a beacon, a point of convenience, in an area where the next accessible city or town is a treacherous 30-minute journey away, often crossing three mountains. Winter season render this path even more dangerous, to a point where it occasionally shuts down for hours.
Harman School is not just a structure of bricks; it is the bond that unifies our community. It's an emblem of our collective resolve, an institution symbolizing our dedication and unyielding spirit. Thus, the idea to close Harman Elementary/High School signals more than just a change in logistics; it threatens our sense of unity, ease of accessibility of education, and community solidarity.
We appeal to the decision-makers and authorities to reconsider this proposed closure that stands to affect the students, teachers and community. Let's not strip our community of its beloved school.
The "Prevent the Proposed Closure of Harman Elementary/High School" petition started on Sept. 27, 2024 and reached 418 signatures as of Nov. 15, with a total of 5,157 petition views, 211 petition shares and 10 promoters.
It is good to know individuals from all over the state, other counties and out-of-state stand behind Harman School. Showing their support towards the school, teachers, staff, students and community. This has been an ongoing battle for year.
The Randolph County Board of Education and Mr. Shawn Dilly have no idea the impact this situation has and will put on every parent, every student, every teacher, every staff member, along with the community. Individuals have expressed their concerns.

In the impact statement for the proposal to close Harman School, our community was degraded and made to sound like we have absolutely nothing.
In correction to these statements, not only does the community have everything "claimed" not to have, but we also have several additions to our community. We do not have to rely on surrounding areas for everything. Most importantly, we have a tight-knit community, no matter the situation, everyone comes together and supports each other. The community stands together in what is right, what is wrong and what we believe in. A community that puts children and students of Harman School a top priority.
