Teacher asks for support for schools

Greetings, and thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

I am an educator. I hold a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree. I am a highly qualified teacher. No, I do not teach in Randolph County, but I am a resident of the city of Elkins, with ancestral roots in Alpena –one of the small rural communities of Randolph County.

I have noticed that many feel like they must “crack the code” of how to fix the RCS budget crisis. Folks coming to board meetings and suggesting full renovations of how things are run.

Here is my suggestion to you: If you care deeply about the future of our schools, there are ways you can make an impact. A small, manageable one for you can be life-changing for a teacher or student.

Were you involved in an activity as a student? Does that activity still exist today? Contact their coach or teacher and see how you can help. Even small donations can help a student get track cleats, or buy a new volleyball or costume, or help send a band kid to Disney World.

See if you can come to a career day or come and read to a classroom. Find out how your workplace supports your local schools. Special guests are always exciting.

Are you retired or looking for part-time work? See if you qualify to substitute! We are in desperate need of substitute teachers.

Do you have a CDL? Apply to be a substitute bus driver! Bus drivers are needed not only for normal bus routes, but also for athletics and band trips and field trips.

Folks like Dr. Shawn Dilly and the rest of the central office were hired for a reason. They have years as education professionals. They have spent years of their lives learning policy and best practices. They are the experts.

They spend all day finding solutions to problems in our education system. Pray for them. Support them in your intentions.

Our students don’t need everyone to suddenly be experts — they just want someone to care. And I want you to keep caring, because public education needs all of the support it can get right now.
