What’s in a name?
What’s in a name ? It is a label we put on things, on places, on people and events. It gives identity, history and location. A name can bring on a sense of pride as well.
Well, things may change in our part of North Central West Virginia. There has been a move among some state legislators to remove the name Spruce Knob, in favor of Trump Mountain.
As I said in the beginning a name gives identity, history and location. Spruce Knob and Spruce Knob Lake have been main stays in this state since the beginning of time. Most things are named for someone that has done something to create the place, the structure or statue. What he or she did to contribute to the state or county.
When Robert C. Byrd pushed for Corridor H, he got credit with his name along the highway. They didn’t name it after a bulldozer operator. When the sculptor carved the images of Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt, Lincoln in the side of a mountain, they still kept the name Mount Rushmore, not Presidents’ Park.
Spruce Knob should not be made to be political, either. Mr. Trump, at this time, has not done anything to directly contribute to this state. The counties of Pendleton, Randolph and other bordering counties have not been asked what they think the effect might be on the area, if any? Have the Representatives checked in with their constituents?
I ask the Legislators to reconsider, keep the name of the biggest mountain in the state, Spruce Mountain. Oh, and you wonder how Spruce Mountain got its name? Grab the family and load them up in the SUV, take a drive up and spend the day hiking and take in the beauty of the state.
