Attention: City of Elkins, Randolph County Commission, US Army Corp of Engineers
I am writing this letter after the terrible tragedy in Texas. I think being proactive rather than being reactive (after the fact) can save lives.
In this particular case, I am asking The InterMountain to find out information on the dam and flood control in our community to see when it was built, the condition of it, how often it is inspected and the last date of inspection.
The Elkins area, before the flood control, often flooded. The safety and the status of the flood control system should be of interest to the whole community.
We all remember the flood of 1985, and we must be appreciative for that system and how officials managed the water flow of the Tygart Valley River.
Again, I would like to see the status of our flood control evaluated, sooner than later, so we do not experience a similar tragedy. I would be amiss if I did not mention the article in The InterMountain about City Hall when they knew they had a problem with the sewer system (pipes) and did not address it until it was too late and now has cost the public millions of dollars.
