Is the U.S. really a democracy?
This letter is in reference to the October 17, 2025 article by Brad Johnson about the “No Kings” rallies. In particular, I would like to point out a couple of things that perhaps the rally supporters have overlooked.
First of all, I agree that there should be no kings in this country: we experienced the first “No Kings” rally in July of 1776 when we declared our independence from Great Britain and King George III. But I am puzzled as to why those who are against President Trump and his policies believe him to be a king.
Each time that he tries to implement one of his policies, he is legally obstructed by the justice system and must appeal the decisions, sometimes all the way to the US Supreme Court, for a possible favorable outcome.
The legal system still works, no matter what some may think, and Mr. Trump is required to follow the laws just like anyone else.
Secondly, during the first “No Kings” rally in June, I saw some of the signs in the Elkins rally which stated “Save our Democracy” or “Our Democracy Must be Saved.”
In Mr. Johnson’s article on 10/17, he quoted the ‘No Kings’ website, stating “…It’s democracy versus dictatorship. And together, we’re choosing democracy.”
Now I would like to point out that we do NOT live in a democracy, no matter how many times the media and politicians use the term.
A democracy is defined as rule by the majority: so it is simply three wolves and one sheep voting on what is for dinner.
We may have a democratic process for choosing our representatives, but we live in a constitutional republic form of government. This is a system in which we live by laws which protect everyone’s rights and property.
So, I would suggest that everyone take a step back and check the facts before protesting what may not be the truth.
