I recently read an article about a friend and colleague, Greg Morgan, whose years at a local bank were recognized. I worked with Greg for 34 and a half years and know about his excellent character and professionalism.
After reading the article, I felt spurred to bring to the attention of our great city and surrounding area another person who should be mentioned: Dr. Jerry M. Metheny, DDS, who just acheived 50 years of dental practice in Elkins.
Dr. Metheny, who I will refer to as Jerry because he never asks to stand out in a crowd, has served this area as an outstanding dentist, but he has done more than that. Jerry married his lovely wife Martha 50 years ago, in July 1976. Together, they raised three daughters, two of whom went to our major universities on athletic scholarships, and one became the first female appointee from West Virginia to the U.S. Naval Academy. This may be one of the most athletic families from our city.
Jerry has been a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins the majority of his life, always supporting it in any way he could, but his dedication to Elkins and the area did not stop there. Jerry has been a philanthropist supporting Davis & Elkins College, West Virginia University, and local events in our area. He has been a successful part-owner in the Steer Steakhouse that will remain a family restaurant for years to come, along with the former Henry G’s restaurant, both employing hundreds, if not thousands, of people during the years.
Jerry is often seen walking the streets of Elkins to “stay in shape.” Jerry’s good friends would drive by while he was walking and ask if he needed a ride, but Jerry would just smile and say he was walking for exercise. He also works out at 7 Wellness to maintain his health for the years ahead.
I will ask you when you pass Jerry on the street, don’t say “thanks,” just say “hello.” That is what Jerry would appreciate.
