Animals, through no fault of their own, end up in shelters. There are many reasons: strays, abandoned animals that came from people, surrendered pets, deceased or sick owners, court ordered shelter care till cases are resolved in court, and injured animals that owners can’t afford to pay vet bills. Some of these animals need to be euthanized due to injuries or bad behavioral problems.
Some of the animals don’t do well in a small kennel. The Randolph County Humane Society is landlocked, so dogs aren’t able to go outside to use the bathroom or enjoy the outside. They need to go out for a walk or be put in fenced areas to relieve kennel time.
When dogs don’t get adopted right away, they may spend months or years in a shelter. I have personally known dogs that spent five to six years In the shelter. They were adopted and have done exceptionally well.
Some dogs did not love their kennel, tore up their blankets, growled at those that walked by. So some get promoted and some not. Should these dogs be put to sleep?
My feeling is we can do better. Other developed countries have solved the problems of abandonment and strays. Their communities are cleaned up. No healthy animal is put to sleep. We are supposed to be the greatest country on earth and our solution is to kill animals. Why can’t we follow their examples and solve this problem?
Would our community be able to reach out to our commission, sign petitions to enforce animal ownership laws or make new ones to help the community, and also help these poor animals?
A great way to help these animals, is to donate food and cleaning supplies to shelter. What we really need is volunteers and fosters. Vet care gets more expensive; just like everything else.
Would you like to help and take a dog or cat, but can’t afford food and vet care? The shelter, with help from wonderful people’s donations, can handle the expense for you. It is important to get the dogs and cats to loving homes as soon as possible.
We need volunteers to walk the dogs, to get them time out of the kennel. There are cats and dogs you can socialize with, in a building. Please, if you can adopt or foster, please call the shelter. There is great need right now.
Many shelters, including our county, is over capacity most of the time. If you have any ideas on how to get more animals adopted, please share. My email is nancytavolacci81@hotmail.com. If you email me with concerns or suggestions, I will pass them on to the board president. The board tries very hard to take care of these animals and find them good homes.
Please, shelter staff everywhere: If you feel the answer is death, you’ve probably been there too long. Maybe you can work in the animal control buildings that put dogs down routinely, some just a three-to-five day hold.
In conclusion, "humane" and "euthanasia" do not go together for healthy non-aggressive animals. I’m sure if the dogs that were there for years, and were adopted, living whatever time they have left enjoying life, could talk, they would say, "thank you for being humane and keeping me alive." Humane is life, humane is trying to help get them a home and love. They are innocent. We are the answer! Please help
