An open letter to Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, Sen. Jim Justice, Congressman Riley Moore and Congresswoman Carol Miller:
On Aug. 19, the United States surpassed the incredible milestone of $40 trillion of debt. It is not something that anyone should be proud of. We now pay more to service this debt than we do for National Defense.
Passing continuing resolutions instead of doing the actual work of funding the government through the budget process laid out in the 1974 Congressional Budget Act is kicking the can down the road for the next generation to deal with the excessive spending and the ever-increasing National Debt.
Conveniently, 11 days before the debt surpassed $40 trillion, yet another continuing resolution was passed to take us past the midterm elections. Now no talk about financial matters, budgets or government shutdowns should be heard until after Dec. 11, well past the General Election in November. What we will hear and see are politicians passing out dollars across our state, with money that we have borrowed, and which adds to this upward spiraling debt.
To allow this debt to increase at the rate of billions per day is not sustainable by any economic standard. We cannot leave this as our legacy for our children and grandchildren.
I am asking each of you, what are you doing to stop this inevitable train wreck?
I would like to invite you to respond to this letter, not to me personally, but publicly. Dave Wilson and TJ Meadows host a statewide radio program that you have often been on and are familiar with. Also Amanda Barron and Dave Allen host a program. Call them up and ask for time to talk about how we can stop this out-of-control spending.
Another option would be to respond to this and every other newspaper in the state. People need to know. It is anticipated that we could reach $41 trillion before January. Please don’t delay. Time is of the essence.
