Be a Responsible Voter

By Cindy Stemple 2 min read

By the time this letter appears in the paper, early voting will have already begun. Voting is a right and a privilege we are fortunate to enjoy, but millions of people across the world are not afforded this crucial right. As voters we have a responsibility to be informed on the candidates and where their priorities lie on issues that affect us all.

Let’s say you want to buy a new car. I feel sure most responsible adults would do research on the variety of options available and not just rely on television ads prevalent on every network. Or they wouldn’t just purchase the first red car or blue car they see just because they like the color.

While investing in an automobile is an important decision, being an informed voter is even more crucial. People often say to me, “I don’t like politics or I don’t get involved in politics”, and I get that. Politics is messy. But, the people we elect to represent us make decisions we have to live with day in and day out like whether or not you’ll have a say on a data center in your neighborhood or the closing of local schools.

State and local as well as national elections affect us all, so please do your research! Talk to the candidates and vote responsibly. Remember, democracy is not a spectator sport.
