Reader: Local BOE shouldn’t be blamed

For the past two years I’ve lived in Randolph County, I’ve watched the public school system in Randolph County fall deeper into crisis, not because of mismanagement at the Board of Education, but because of deliberate policy decisions made at the state and federal levels. Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, stated last Friday that people who participated in the No Kings protests were Marxists, socialists, antifa advocates, anarchists, terrorists, and pro-Hamas. This letter is in reference to the October 17, 2025 article by Brad Johnson about the “No Kings” rallies. In particular, I would like to point out a couple of things that perhaps the rally supporters have overlooked. First of all, I agree that there should be no kings in this country: we experienced the first “No Kings” rally in July of 1776 when we declared our independence from Great Britain and King George III. I grew up in a small town in Zimbabwe called Chakari. I’d walk 10 minutes to school each morning for primary school (elementary). I remember conversations pertaining to my cousins in Gokwe, the more rural areas of Zimbabwe, who would have to walk 30 minutes to an hour, each way to school. Growing up I knew they were a disadvantaged bunch, simply because the main resource to lift them out of poverty, education, was so difficult for them to access.
