PHILIPPI – A former Alderson Broaddus University basketball player is behind bars and accused of stabbing three men early Sunday in Morgantown during an altercation outside a nightclub.

Devin Colston, 22, of Baltimore, was taken into custody Monday afternoon in Philippi by U.S. Marshals and Morgantown police. Colston has been charged with three felony counts of malicious wounding. He is being held in Tygarts Valley Regional Jail on a $75,000 cash surety bond issued by Barbour County Magistrate Kathi McBee.

According to the criminal complaint, police arrived after midnight at the intersection of High and Wall streets in Morgantown where they discovered three victims with stab wounds described as “non life-threatening.”

Police used surveillance video from surrounding businesses, which showed “a black male with dreadlocks, wearing a white polo, green pants, white shoes and a multi-colored hat can be seen wielding and slashing at people with a knife, including the victims,” the complaint states.

Court documents state “detectives later received a tip that the person responsible for the stabbing was Devin Gary Colsoton” and “later identified Colston from comparing social media photos and fight footage.”

The alleged victims include two West Virginia University football players, Tyree Owens, 19, of Oveido, Fla., and Kenyatta Green, 19, of Beverly, N.J., as well as Jamal Calay, 20, of Silver Spring, Md.

WVU head football coach Dana Holgorsen said in a Monday press release that Owens and Green were kicked off the team for a “violation of team rules.”

“We’re appreciative of the efforts of the Morgantown Police Department and thankful that those identified will make a full recovery,” Holgorsen said.

According to a press release from Alderson Brouddus University, school officials are aware of the incident and thankful the injuries were not life-threatening.

“Alderson Broaddus University is fully cooperating with and will continue to support all efforts made by law enforcement agencies. At this time ABU is waiting for more information from these police departments. The University has taken immediate disciplinary action against this student and as additional information becomes available, may be subject to further actions,” the statement reads.

“Alderson Broaddus University takes the safety of its students as well as all citizens with the highest priority. ABU does not, and will not, condone any behavior on or off campus that could put someone’s well-being at risk.”

Colston, who was previously listed as a guard for the ABU basketball team on the athletic department’s website, is no longer on the roster.
