D&E wrestlers picked sixth in MEC
BRIDGEPORT — The Mountain East Conference (MEC) released its preseason wrestling poll for the 2019-20 season on Monday.
Davis & Elkins College was tabbed sixth in the poll.
The Senators were impressive in their program debut, picking up a 36-12 road win over Alderson Broaddus on Friday.
Head coach Jerry Boland has a hungry team laden with freshman for the team’s inaugural season.
Notre Dame (Ohio) is the preseason favorite, earning five first-place votes, after winning the NCAA D-II wrestling championship in 2014 and 2017.
UNC Pembroke is second with the remaining first-place vote and boasts a lineup with four nationally-ranked wrestlers in the preseason rankings.
West Liberty rounds out the first half of the poll in fourth, while Fairmont State (11), Urbana (9) and D&E (8) round out the six-team poll.
Fairmont State is also in its first year as a program.
Notre Notre Dame (fifth), West Liberty (12th) and UNC Pembroke (21st) are all ranked in the national preseason poll as well.
The first MEC wrestling championship will be held Feb. 1 at West Liberty.
The Senators, meanwhile, will return to action Friday at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational in Washington, Pa.
