Lady Colt spikers win sectional title
Defeat Frankfort in five sets, will host Class AA Region 1 tournament on Saturday
RIDGELEY — Philip Barbour outlasted Frankfort in five sets on Wednesday night to capture the Class AA, Region I, Section 1 title.
“It was intense,” veteran PB coach Heather Halfin said. “We brought two vans full of kids over to support us, and the team showed a lot of heart. It was an emotional game for our seniors who rallied with the team to finish.”
The win by PBHS not only captured the Lady Colts’ latest sectional crown, it also put them in better position for a home-court opportunity in the Region I finals set to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at PBHS.
The Lady Colts will face Weir instead of double-A power Oak Glen in the opening round.
As long as Philip Barbour wins in the opening round on Saturday, the Lady Colts will continue a long stent of making it into the state tourney, where they have earned a total of four state championships at the Charleston Civic Center.
Philip Barbour dented the Frankfort gym scoreboard with a 25-17 win to get things started before falling 25-14 in the second set.
With a 25-14 win in the third set, PB put the pressure on the hosts who responded with a 25-20 decision to lead up to a fifth and final set for the sectional crown.
The Lady Colts secured the win with a 17-15 win in the deciding set.
PB Senior Emma Kennedy had 29 digs. Averi Carpenter added 17, while Alyssa Hill and Kilea Payne notched 16 digs each.
