MORGANTOWN -- It will be a homecoming for Derek Culver when No. 25 West Virginia plays at Youngstown State University today.
Game time is set for 1 p.m. and the game will not be televised.
Culver, a sophomore forward, is averaging 11 points and 9.6 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who have been idle since cruising past Nicholls State, 83-57, last Saturday at the Coliseum. He grew up near the Covelli Centre, where today's game will be played.
The Penguins earned a 73-55 win over Binghamton on Wednesday. They are coached by Jerrod Calhoun, who has a long relationship with WVU's Bob Huggins.
Calhoun was a student assistant on Huggins' staff at Cincinnati and later become both an assistant and director of basketball operations for the Mountaineers before becoming the head coach at Fairmont State University.
He's in his third season with Youngstown State, which has a 7-5 record and is led by guard Darius Quisenberry with 14.6 ppg.
Forward Naz Bohannon also averages 8.1 points and 8.3 rebounds for the Penguins.
Freshman forward Oscar Tshiebwe leads WVU with 12.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per outing.
Senior guard Jermaine Haley, who didn't play in last Saturday's game (coach's decision), is expected to see action today.
Culver, Tshiebwe and Haley have been the regular starters for the Mountaineers, along with sophomore guard Jordan McCabe and sophomore forward Emmitt Matthews Jr.
After today's game, WVU will be idle until returning to Ohio next Sunday to battle No. 5 Ohio State at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, the home venue of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.
