Hornets open season with 28-0 win over Barbour

PHILIPPI – The Elkins Middle School football team opened the season with a 28-0 win over Barbour County Wednesday night at Alderson Broaddus’ Multisport Performance Stadium.

With Wimer Stadium deemed unsafe for public events due to bleacher issues, the contest was moved to the AB campus.

Riley Rider had three rushing touchdowns for the Hornets.

Nick Bowers also scored on the ground for the winners.

EMS picked up a pair of safeties as well.

“I was real pleased with how we played for our opening game,” said second-year Hornets coach Jay Auvil, “I think our defense held (Barbour County) without a first down and our offensive line did a great job of blocking.

“I was a little concerned about our line coming into the season because they were so young but I was very pleased with how they played tonight.”

Elkins will visit Petersburg next Wednesday, while Barbour County is scheduled to visit Trinity on Sept. 24.
