PHILIPPI — It had been nearly a month since the Philip Barbour boys soccer team took to the field before Tuesday night’s Class AA-A, Region II, Section 1 matchup against Lincoln.

The Colts showed little rust, however, as they advanced with a 6-0 victory at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park.

Philip Barbour (5-2-0 will now travel to Robert C. Byrd, which had a first-round bye, at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

In the last game they had played because of COVID-19 protocols, the Colts had defeated the Cougars 7-0 on Sept. 22, and Tuesday’s outcome had similar results.

Philip Barbour struck for three goals in each half and junior goalkeeper Cody Cooper and the Colt defense kept Lincoln off the board.

The junior trio of Grant Dadisman, Ethan Gregory and Trenton Whited had two goals each for the winners.

Both of Gregory’s goals came in the second half, including a score from 10 yards out where he nearly did a 360 turn around and found the back of the net.

Lincoln keeper Jared Nelson limited more scoring opportunities from the Colts with several key stops.

Philip Barbour earned a 2-1 win over Robert C. Byrd when the squads met Sept. 3 in Clarksburg.

In girls’ Class AA-A, Region II, Section 1 action, the top-seed Lady Colts will host Grafton on Thursday at either 5:30 or 8 p.m.
