GRAFTON -- Class AA, No. 15 came to life in the second half to rally past Grafton, 28-10, Friday night in Big 10 Conference play at McKinney Field.
The Tigers (3-2) trailed 10-0 at halftime before erupting for 28 unanswered points over the final two quarters.
Elkins scored on the opening possession of the second half as Dante Ramirez capped off a five-play drive with a 21-yard run to cut the deficit to 10-6 after the failed two-point conversion.
The turning point in the game came on the Bearcats' next series when Ramirez returned a fumble 86 yards with Grafton driving deep into EHS territory. The conversion again failed to keep the score at 12-10.
The Tiger defense, meanwhile, held Grafton on downs on its next two possessions, scoring points off of both stops.
A run by quarterback Rodney Vandevender led to Trevor Smith's 1-yard plunge for the first score and Ramirez followed with a 10-yard scamper as the Tigers built a commanding 28-10 lead.
Ramirez and Vandevender accounted for the key two-point conversion runs.
Elkins' balanced offensive rushing attack was led by Smith with 104 yards rushing. Vandevender tallied 72 yards on the ground, along with 72 yards passing, and Ramirez had 63 yards rushing.
Elkins was limited with its offensive possessions in the opening half as the Bearcats controlled the game clock in scoring 10 points in the second quarter on a 27-yard field goal from Kaden Delaney and a 4-yard run by quarterback Blake Moore.
The Tigers are scheduled to face Roane County next Friday at Buckhannon-Upshur High School. Grafton (2-3) is slated to visit Richwood on the same evening.
