D&E battles No. 3 UC in close setback
CHARLESTON — Davis & Elkins gave undefeated and third-ranked the University of Charleston all it could handle in dropping an 86-80 Mountain East Conference decision on Wednesday night.
The Lady Senators (2-11, 2-11 MEC) received 22 points each from Jamiyah Johnson and Allie Taylor in the hard-fought setback.
The contest was tied at 63-63 late in the third quarter before the Lady Golden Eagles (13-0, 13-0) forged ahead, 72-64, on six straight points by Brooklyn Pannell to end the frame.
The margin grew to 10 in the final quarter before D&E got to within four, at 82-78, on a 3-pointer by Jessica Eadsforth-Yates with 30 seconds left.
But UC hit four three throws down the stretch to secure the win.
The game was played on close terms through the first two quarters, with the hosts leading 22-20 after one quarter and 45-42 at the intermission.
Pannell led all scorers with 26 points on the night. She was followed by Erykah Russell with 20, Trinity Palacio with 13 points and five assists and Anastasiia Zakharova with 12 points.
Eadsforth-Yates chipped in 16 points for D&E, while Amiah Banks had 10 points and Johnson and Taylor collected 10 and eight boards, respectively.
D&E’s home game against Glenville State on Saturday has been postponed. The Lady Senators will now return to action at 5 p.m. next Wednesday at home against West Virginia State.
UC is slated to visit Concord at 2 p.m. Saturday.
