TENNERTON -- The return of leading scorer Ryan Hurst, along with several other key contributors from last year's 12-11 squad, has expectations high for the Buckhannon-Upshur High School boys basketball team this season.
The squad's only graduation loss was versatile team leader Ryan Strader.
Hurst, who became the school's leading scorer in soccer in the fall, averaged 16 points per game as a junior in earning a spot on the Class AAA all-state third team.
"Ryan is a student of the game," said fourth-year Buccaneer coach Travis Foster. "He's a great kid and very calm on the floor. He has great speed and offensive skills."
Lamar Hurst, a 6-foot-6 guard, averaged 10 points per game last season as a sophomore to go with 4.4 rebounds.
To compliment the guard play, B-U has plenty of size inside.
"We are going to be a matchup problem for teams with our size," Foster said. "We have a lot of length and guys that can step out behind the arc."
Key returners inside the paint include seniors Josh Loudin, Zach White, Will McCauley and Noam Keith.
Loudin, a 6-foot-5 forward, averaged 8.7 points and 5.7 boards last season.
White hit for 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds and the 6-foot-6 McCauley netted 7.7 points and 5.3 caroms.
There will be four classifications in place this season in prep basketball.
B-U will compete 4A and be in Region I, Section 2 with Bridgeport, Preston and University.
Region I, Section 1 schools include Brooke, John Marshall, Morgantown and Wheeling Park.
