ELKINS -- The Elkins Middle School girls basketball team split with East Fairmont on Thursday.
The Lady Hornets (5-3) dropped a 40-34 decision as Sarah Simmons scored 10 for the visitors.
Addy Cogar had nine and Karah Bennett and Maddie Belan eight each for EMS.
"I was proud of our effort," Lady Hornets coach Clint Bennett said. "They always played hard but we had defensive communication breakdowns and that hurt us."
Elkins (6-1) took the JV game, 39-22, as Maddy Shreve scored 10 and Hannah Currence added eight.
Kyah Stump had nine for East Fairmont.
The Lady Hornets will remain home on Monday to face Robert L. Bland. JV action begins at 5:45 p.m., followed by the varsity tilt.
