Elkins, PB wrestlers in action today
B-U has strong showing as Class AAA portion of state tourney concludes in Huntington
HUNTINGTON — All three members of the 2021 Elkins High School wrestling team will be in action today at the Class AA-A state tournament.
Freshman Gavin Boland, senior Alex Burge and junior Nic Barrickman will take to the mats inside Mountain Health Arena for first-round action set to get underway at 11 a.m.
The championship round is set for Thursday evening.
Boland, who is 20-1 on the season and placed third in regionals, will compete in the 106-pound weight class. He enters states fifth in the West Virginia Coaches/wvmat.com rankings.
Burge (14-7) placed third at regionals and will wrestle at 132, while Barrickman (14-7) finished fourth at regionals and is competing at 195.
Philip Barbour will have two competitors in senior Matthew Shahan at 106 and senior Bailey Wilt at 145.
Shahan, who lost to Boland in the third-place match at regionals, is 13-4 on the season. Wilt was also fourth at regionals and brings a record of 13-9 into the tourney.
The Class AAA portion of the tourney concluded on Tuesday night.
Buckhannon-Upshur had a strong showing, as sophomore Breagan Pearson (145) defeated Huntington’s Orion Barrett, 5-0, in the third-place match.
Junior Aidan Wilson was fourth at 113, junior Tucker Hurst fifth at 126 and freshman Liam Garcia and junior Luke Bohnsack sixth at 120 and 160, respectively.
Senior Julius Hobbs, the 2020 champion at 120, finished 2-2 in the tourney in the 132-pound class.
The state wrestling tourney is traditionally held in February but moved to April due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the season being delayed.
