Lady Mountain Lions secure state berth

Tucker County headed to Charleston for 17th straight season after besting Pocahontas County in co-regional final

HAMBLETON — The Tucker County girls secured their 17th consecutive berth in the state tourney with a 57-23 win over Pocahontas County Wednesday night in a Class A, Region II co-final.

The fourth- seeded Lady Mountain Lions (16-4) will face No. 5 Webster County at 9 p.m. Tuesday in quarterfinal play at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

Tucker County held a slim 6-4 lead after one quarter but outscored the Lady Warriors, 21-7, in the second quarter and 27-7 in the third.

Kadie Colebank had 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to lead the Lady Mountain Lions, while Macy Helmick had 14 points, three assists and three steals, London Hood 12 points, three assists and seven steals and Gracie Rapp four steals.

Pocahontas County, which was playing without three starters due to COVID-19 protocol, was led by Makayla Ervine with 13 points.
