Liberty uses 16-hit attack to best Tigers

CLARKSBURG — Liberty plated seven runs over the first two innings to hand Elkins a 12-2 setback in six innings Tuesday in Big 10 Conference play.

Jayce Clevenger, Zach Womeldorff and Jacob Fahey led the Mountaineers’ 16-hit attack with two safeties and two RBIs apiece.

Dustyn Primavero had an RBI double in the fourth and Owen Haddix an RBI groundout in the fifth for the Tigers (0-1).

Jace Bartley went 4 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed just two runs on three hits, struck out eight and walked three.

Gage Huffman was tagged with the loss in 1 1/3 innings, surrendering seven runs on six hits, striking out four and walking two.

Elkins opens the home portion of the schedule at 6 p.m. Friday against Philip Barbour for another Big 10 encounter.

Petersburg 6, TV 1

PETERSBURG — Tygarts Valley lost a 6-1 verdict to Petersburg to open the season on Monday evening.

Seth Cullers fanned 18 and allowed just one run on one hit in 6 1/3 innings to earn the win for the Vikings.

Brandon Mahoney took the loss for the Bulldogs as he gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings, striking out six and walking three.

Jonathan Mallow went 4 for 4 to lead Petersburg at the plate.

Garrett Gibson and Derrick Gear had the lone hits for Tygarts Valley, which hosts Gilmer County at 6 p.m. Friday.
