McDaniels, B-U pull past Elkins, 54-36

ELKINS — Buckhannon-Upshur used 25 points from Shelby McDaniels and a third-quarter surge to claim a 54-36 win over Elkins Thursday night in Big 10 Conference play at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

Freshman Gabby Parke added 13 points and senior McKenzie Reynolds nine for the Lady Bucs, who concluded the regular season with a 7-5 mark.

Anna Belan netted 10 and Aaliyah Hogue and Gracelin Corley eight each for the Lady Tigers (1-11).

Elkins trailed 26-18 at halftime but started the third quarter on a 8-3 run to cut the deficit to 29-26 on a pair of free throws from Belan.

A 3-pointer by Parke, however, on the other end put B-U back up by six.

Corley answered with a putback to bring the the Lady Tigers to within 32-28 but they came no closer as the Lady Bucs closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 41-28 entering the final quarter.

The lead grew to 21 points before Hogue converted a four-point play late in regulation to finish the scoring.

Elkins is slated to visit Webster County this evening.

The Lady Tigers will then host Liberty at 7 p.m. Monday in Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 tourney play.

B-U is the second seed in the Class AAAA, Region 1, Section 2 tourney and will entertain third-seed Preston at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Top-seed University hosts No. 4 Bridgeport in the other sectional semifinal.
