BECKLEY -- Alderson Broaddus defeated West Virginia State, 6-5, in Mountain East Conference baseball tournament action Thursday at Linda K. Epling Stadium.
The Battlers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double by Taylor Cook and Cameron Sheets' RBI single.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the fourth inning when Brett Christian drove in a run with a single.
Cook and Lane Casto added RBI doubles in the fifth to extend AB's lead to 4-2.
After the Yellow Jackets trimmed the lead to 4-3, Cook led off the seventh with a homer and Misael Sanchez delivered an RBI single.
Braden Mullenix struck out the first two Yellow Jacket batters in the seventh before surrendering a double to Michael Stone and a homer by Matthew Kline.
Ryan Varley came in for relief and ended the inning with a strikeout. The Battlers were unable to score in the eighth inning and Varley was able to get his team out of the bottom of the eighth by getting three quick outs.
Varley remained on the bump for AB and closed out the game, earning the save.
Cook went 4 for 4 with a walk and three RBIs for the Battlers.
Mullenix picked up the win, improving to 3-4 on the season. Starter Dean Kirby, Mullenix and Varley combined for 10 strikeouts in the win.
AB, which is now 18-18 overall and 16-15 MEC, will now face Wheeling University at 3:30 p.m. today.
