CHARLESTON — The two top seeds in the Class AAA state tournament are headed home after being upset in quarterfinal action Wednesday at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
Top-seed Robert C. Byrd (13-2) lost to Hampshire, 53-47, in the first game of Wednesday evening’s second session, while No. 2 and fellow Big 10 Conference member Fairmont Senior (15-2) dropped a 49-45 decision to Winfield earlier in the day.
Making its first-ever state tourney appearance, Hampshire (15-4) used 25 points from Drew Keckley and a big fourth quarter to upend the Eagles.
Trailing 36-32 after three quarters, the Trojans took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Keckley to make it 40-39 with 5:15 left in regulation.
RCB trailed by as many as seven points before Bryson Lucas hit a 3-pointer to bring his team to within 48-45 with 40 seconds left.
But Keckley, who had nine points in the final quarter, answered with a trey of his own on the other end and the Eagles came no closer.
Trevor Sardo added 12 points in the win, while Mikhi Anderson bucketed nine points to go along with 12 rebounds.
Lucas led RCB with 25 points and eight rebounds. Jeremiah King chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The game was tied at 22-22 at halftime before the Generals (14-6) took a 37-34 advantage after three quarters.
Two free throws by the Polar Bears’ Jaelin Johnson, who had 22 points in the game, cut the Winfield lead to 46-45 with 37 seconds left.
The seventh-seeded Generals, who didn’t have a field goal the final 5:01 of regulation, secured the win on a pair of free three throws by Shilot with six ticks left to make it 49-45.
