High school postseason action gets underway

ELKINS -- Postseason action for high school baseball, softball and track and field takes center stage this week.

The Class AA, Region II, Section 1 tourney for baseball and softball got underway Monday as both Elkins squads traveled to Liberty.

The Tigers dropped a 14-4 decision, while the Lady Tigers rallied for a 7-6 win.

Top seed Philip Barbour will now host Liberty today on the baseball diamond, while No. 3 Robert C. Byrd visits No. 2 Lincoln.

Elkins will travel to the loser of the RCB-Lincoln contest on Wednesday in an elimination contest.

Buckhannon-Upshur is the third seed in the Class AAA, Region I, Section 2 tourney and will visit No. 2 University today.

Fourth-seed Preston travels to top-seed Bridgeport in the other opening matchup.

In Class A, Tygarts Valley is the second seed in the Region II, Section 1 tourney and will host the winner of today's matchup between No. 6 Clay-Battelle at No. 3 Notre Dame on Wednesday.

No. 5 Trinity visits No. 4 Doddridge in today's other contest, with the winner visiting top-seed South Harrison on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, No. 5 Tucker County ventures to No. 4 East Hardy today and third-seed Pendleton County hosts No. 6 Paw Paw in Region II, Section 2 play.

The Paw Paw-Pendleton winner travels to No. 2 Petersburg on Wednesday and the Tucker County-East Hardy victor will be at top-seed Moorefield.

Baseball regional action is scheduled to be held June 14-19, and the state tournament on June 24-26 at Charleston's Appalachian Power Park.

In sectional softball play, the Lady Tigers will now visit top seed and undefeated Lincoln today, while No. 2 Philip Barbour entertains No. 3 Robert C. Byrd.

Buckhannon-Upshur is the second seed in the Class AAA, Region I, Section 2 tournament and will host No. 3 Bridgeport at 5:30 p.m. today.

Top-seed University hosts No. 4 Preston in today's other sectional opener.

In Class A, Region II, Section 2 play, Tygarts Valley is the fourth seed and will visit top-seed Doddridge County today, with No. 3 South Harrison traveling to No. 2 Clay-Battelle in the other sectional opener.

Tucker County is the third seed in the Class A, Region II, Setion 1 tourney and visits No. 2 Moorefield today.

No. 5 Pendleton County travels to No. 4 East Hardy in the other opening matchup. Petersburg is the top seed and faces that victor on Wednesday.

Regional play takes place June 14-19 and the state tourney will be held June 22-23 at Little Creek Park in South Charleston.

In track and field, Elkins and Philip Barbour will compete in the Class AA Region 2 championships Thursday at Lewis County, Buckhannon-Upshur will travel to Brooke on Friday for the Class AAA Region 1 championships and Tygarts Valley and Tucker County will be in the Class A Region II meet at Doddridge County on Wednesday.

The state meet is set for June 10 (Class A), June 11 (AA) and June 12 (AAA) at Charleston's Laidley Field.
