Senior Jenna Burgess leads Petersburg into Class A state tournament action set to begin today at Little Creek Park in South Charleston.
SOUTH CHARLESTON -- Petersburg begins Class A state softball tournament play today at Little Creek Park against undefeated Wahama.
The Lady Vikings (21-5) enter the tourney with some momentum, winning 17 of their last 18 games and cruising to victories of 4-1 and 8-0 against Clay-Battelle in the Region II championship series.
No state tourney was held in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Petersburg, coached by Dwayne "Bubba" Hedrick, advanced to the title game as a member of Class AA two years ago, falling to Herbert Hoover.
Pitcher-infielder Jenna Burgess, one of six seniors on the squad, leads the Lady Vikings into the tournament.
Wahama (24-0) looks to sophomore Mikie Lieving, who has struck out more than 200 batters on the mound and is batting over .600.
Petersburg and Wahama will square off 30 minutes after the conclusion of today's 9:30 a.m. matchup between Ritchie County (21-5) and Midland Trail (20-4) in the double-elimination tournament.
The two losers will meet at 4:30 p.m., followed by the winners.
Another elimination game takes place at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the title game set for 2:30 p.m.
Today's Class AAA opening matchups include John Marshall (21-5-3) vs. St. Albans (30-1) and Washington (25-3) vs. Cabell Midland (27-9).
In Class AA, opening games include Oak Glen (28-1) vs. Independence (22-14) and three-time state champion Herbert Hoover (24-3) vs. Sissonville (19-4).
The Class AAA title game is set for 2:15 p.m. Wednesday and the double-A championship will be at 2 p.m.
