Will Knight went 6 2/3 strong innings on the mound for Post 29 in Wednesday's loss to Parkersburg in state tourney play in Wheeling.
WHEELING -- Parkersburg Post 15 pushed three runs across in the top of the 12th inning to claim a 4-1 win over Elkins Post 29 Wednesday in American Legion state tournament action at J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex.
The squads received strong efforts from their starting pitchers, both who just completed their freshman seasons in college, as Post 29's Will Knight (Alderson Broaddus) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one unearned run and fanning seven.
Left-hander Colin Bryant (West Virginia Wesleyan) went eight innings for Post 15, giving up one run and striking out nine.
Parkersburg (19-7) took a 1-0 lead in the second before Elkins tied the game in the fifth when Cory Reed singled and later scored.
The game remained deadlocked until the 12th when Parkersburg struck for three runs on an RBI sacrifice fly from Eli Reeves, a run-producing triple from Dustin Corley and an RBI double from Brodie Wiggins.
Corley led the winners at the plate, going 3 for 5 with two triples, while Nic Menarchek, Izek Baldwin and Brett Haskins each had two hits.
Kyle Moore went 1 1/3 innings to earn the win.
Andrew Manley worked 2 2/3 innings of relief, striking out four. Drew Woofer also saw time on the mound.
Zane McCord was tagged with the loss for Post 29 in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Gage Bibey worked 3 2/3 innings, striking out five, and Jayden Herron went a 1/3 of an inning.
Elkins (11-8) will now face Riverside at 10 a.m. today in an elimination contest, while Parkersburg battles host Wheeling at 6 p.m.
Wheeling defeated South Charleston, 5-2, in Wednesday's final game.
Bridgeport squares off against South Charleston at 2 p.m.
Bridgeport blanked Riverside, 1-0, in Wednesday's first game as Ben McDougal threw a complete-game two-hitter with seven strikeouts.
