Post 29 downs Buckhannon to win area banner

TENNERTON — Cody Cooper tossed a complete-game five-hitter as Elkins Post 29 captured the Area 5 title with a 9-3 win over Buckhannon on Wednesday night .

It was the 14th straight area banner captured by Elkins, which plated three runs in each of the third and seventh innings en route to sweeping the best-of-three series.

Post 29 started the scoring in the third as Ethan Kirk doubled, Dustyn Primavero drew a walk and Nick Hamrick followed with a two-run double. Hamrick later scored on a balk to make it 3-0.

Primavero singled in Jesiah Matlick and Alex Wilson cracked an RBI double to extend Post 29’s lead to 5-0 in the fourth.

Post 7 battled back in the fifth when Isaac Lane cracked a bases-clearing double to cut the lead to 5-3.

But Austin Bolyard scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, and in the seventh Cory Reed had an RBI groundout and Gage Bibey drove in a run and later scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.

Connor Johnson took the loss for Buckhannon, allowing six runs on just four hits in five-plus innings. Clint Crites also had a double for the hosts.

Elkins advances to the American Legion state tourney set for July 27-Aug. 1 in Wheeling.
