Hornets win debut in Mid-8

WESTON — The Elkins Middle School football team had a successful showing in its Mid-8 Conference debut on Wednesday night.

The Hornets claimed a 27-0 victory over Robert L. Bland.

It was the season opener for the squad after last week’s game at Tygarts Valley was canceled.

“It was good to finally get on the field,” said third-year EMS coach Jay Auvil. “Our defense limited (RLB) to just around 50 yards or so and a lot of that came on one play.”

Offensively, the Hornets were paced by Jaidin Harding, who scored three touchdowns on the night.

Blaine Thompson also found the end zone.

Ethan Harner, meanwhile, was good on a conversion kick.

On defense, Kyle Reed collected an interception and Owen Stanley recorded a sack.

Elkins, along with Barbour County, joined the Mid-8 Conference this fall after the departures of Bridgeport and South Harrison. Other members include Buckhannon-Upshur, Mountaineer (Clarksburg), Lincoln, Robert L. Bland, Taylor County and Washington Irving.

With the bleachers at Wimer Field being deemed unfit last August, the Hornets played all road games last season and will continue doing so pending the completion of the field at Elkins High School.

Elkins will visit Mountnaineer at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Starting at $3.92/week.
