WESTON -- Drew Cayton scored a pair of touchdowns to help lead Lewis County to a 22-8 win over Elkins Friday night in Big 10 Conference action at Minutemen Stadium.
Cayton opened the scoring for the Minutemen (1-2, 1-1 Big 10) when he scampered in for a 10-yard touchdown with three minutes left in the opening quarter. The two-point conversion attempt on a run failed as the hosts held a 6-0 advantage.
Lewis County extended the lead to 14-0 with 7:32 to play in the second quarter when Cayton scored again, this time on a 4-yard scamper, and Brayden Carder ran in the two-point conversion.
Neither team was able to find the end zone for the remainder of the first half and the Tigers (0-3, 0-3) looked poised to strike first in the third canto. But a fumble on the Minutemen 1-yard line gave the ball back to the hosts and kept the score 14-0 with 42 seconds to play in the quarter.
Lewis County all but sealed the deal after the turnover as it embarked on a 99-yard, time-consuming drive that was capped off by a 12-yard touchdown run by Carder with 5:06 left in regulation. Carder had 45 yards rushing on that drive alone and added the two-point conversion to make it 22-0.
Elkins didn't go quietly, however, and finally got on the board on the ensuing drive when Javier Rosario capped off a 54-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run with 2:57 left to play. The drive was aided by a 33-yard run from Nicholas Bowers and Rosario ran in the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 22-8.
An attempted onside kick from the Tigers was recovered by the Minutemen, who were able to pick up a pair of first downs and kill the clock.
Rosario finished the contest with 56 yards rushing on 10 attempts. Chase Workman recovered a fumble for the Elkins defense.
Lewis County will travel to Roane County for a non-conference contest next Friday.
The Tigers have a bye week next Friday and will return to action on Sept. 24 when they travel to Philippi to battle rival Philip Barbour.
