Region II meet set for today at D&E

ELKINS -- The path to the state meet takes place over the Davis & Elkins College course today as seven schools will compete in the Class AA, Region II Championships.

The girls race begins at 1 p.m., followed by the boys at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Big 10 Conference schools Elkins, Lewis County, Liberty, Lincoln and Robert C. Byrd will be joined by Braxton County and Roane County in seeking state meet berths.

One to five full teams competing will qualify two squads and if six to nine compete, three will secure spots.

Individually, each region will qualify 20 percent of the number of runners that start the race, with a minimum of 10 qualifiers from each region.

Both EHS squads are in the running to capture the regional crown.

The Tiger boys, led by seniors Charlie Smoak and Lucas Anger, are the favorites.

Smoak, who captured the Big 10 Conference title last week, has won seven races this fall.

Lewis County junior Slate Swiger is expected to challenge the EHS duo for the individual title.

Braxton County and Liberty join the Lady Tigers as front-runners for the girls title.

Liberty is paced by junior Aliya Todd and sophomore Destiny Berryman. Braxton County sophomore Laura Cain and EHS junior Samantha Sproul are others to watch for top individual honors.

Philip Barbour, meanwhile, will compete in the Class AA, Region I Championships today at West Taylor Elementary School, along with Berkeley Springs, East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior, Frankfort, host Grafton, Keyser, North Marion, Oak Glen and Weir.

In the Class AAA, Region I meet, Buckhannon-Upshur, Bridgeport, Brooke, John Marshall, Morgantown, Preston, University and Wheeling Park battle at Preston High School.

Tucker County ventures to Doddridge County for Class A, Region II competition.
