Senators set for clash with UC tonight

D&E enters MEC men’s soccer match third nationally, while Golden Eagles are sixth

ELKINS — A matchup of nationally ranked men’s soccer teams takes place this evening when No. 3 Davis & Elkins College hosts No. 6 the University of Charleston.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Nuttall Field.

The Senators enter the contest with a record of 13-0-1, while the Golden Eagles are 13-1-0 — their lone loss coming to D&E last month.

It was the first Mountain East Conference setback for UC, which captured the national championship in 2019, since 2016.

There was no champion declared in 2020 due to COVID-19.

The Senators have shown marked improvement since head coach Dean Johnson’s arrival.

Following an 8-9-0 record in 2019, Johnson orchestrated a 7-2-0 turnaround in an untraditional spring season shortened by the pandemic.

Undefeated in its first 14 matches this fall, D&E has only given up goals in four matches and is 10-0-1 in the MEC.

Senior goalkeeper, Jeremy Coste ranks first in the country in shutouts with10 and first in goals against average with only .346 per game.

Both teams are high-powered offensively.

Charleston, 12-1-0 in MEC games, ranks second in the country in scoring offense with 3.57 goals per game and 10.57 points per game, while the Senators are fourth with 9.14 points per game and fifth with 3.14 goals per game.

MEC foe Notre Dame College, which tied the Senators 2-2 earlier this season, ranks first nationally in scoring offense with 3.83 goals per game and first in points per game with 11.00.
