Tucker’s Russell places fourth in state tournament

WHEELING -- Tucker County's Harper Russell placed fourth individually in Class A as the state golf tournament concluded Wednesday at Oglebay Resort.
Russell, a senior, finished with a two-day total 27-over 169, shooting an 84 in the first round and an 85 on Wednesday.
St. Marys' Brandon Lawhon was the Class A individual state champion, carding 80s on both days to finish 18-over 160.
Pocahontas County's David Gibb (172) placed seventh and Moorefield's Ryan McGregor (173) and J.J. Carr (174) were eighth and ninth, respectively.
St. Marys captured its third straight Class A championship with a 504, followed by Wheeling Central (511), Moorefield (525), Pocahontas County (560), Notre Dame (580), Gilmer County (586), Summers County (599) and Calhoun County (616).
Elkins High School's Tanner Miller finished with a two-day total 193, shooting a 93 in the final round after opening with a 100. He tied North Marion's Evan Hall for 25th among the Class AA field.
"Tanner hit the ball much better today," Tigers coach Dave Baird said. "He struggled around the greens on the back nine, yet I was proud how he came back from a rough first day.
"Hopefully today showed him that he can return next year and knows he can play well at states on a very challenging course."
Philip Barbour placed seventh in the Class AA with a 600. Mason Halfin finished tied for 21st for the Colts with a two-day total 189, carding a 93 in the final round after opening with a 96.
Other PB scores included Brayden Cole (105-101--206), Sara Simon (108-104--212) and Alfred Isch (101-111--212).
Herbert Hoover captured the double-A title with a 498, while Winfield (507) was second and defending state champion Shady Spring (530) third.
Keyser (534), North Marion (539), Roane County (579), Philip Barbour and Point Pleasant (604) rounded out the field.
Herbert Hoover's Bryson Beaver won the individual Class AA title with a 13-over two-day total 155.
Buckhannon-Upshur senior Evan Coffman finished tied for 22nd in Class AAA with a two-day total 179.
George Washington captured the Class AAA title with a 485, followed by Cabell Midland (493) and defending state champion Wheeling Park (494), who both entered the final round five shots behind the Patriots.
Woodrow Wilson (500), John Marshall (514), Hurricane (518), Washington (549) and Jefferson (550) completed the field.
Woodrow Wilson's Zan Hill was the Class AAA individual champion with a two-day total 12-over 154 to edge Cabell Midland's Cameron Jarvis by one stroke.
