PHILIPPI -- Philip Barbour's quest for a 20th straight state tourney appearance began by claiming the Class AA, Region II, Section 1 title on Wednesday night.
The Lady Colts (44-7-2) will host the regional tourney on Saturday after defeating Robert C. Byrd, 25-12, 25-15, 25-18, in the sectional title game. RCB and the champion and runner-up from the section 2 tourney will also compete.
Emily Denison had 12 kills and four blocks, MacKenna Halfin 10 kills and 14 digs and Alyssa Hill nine kills in the championship tilt. Averi Carpenter added 17 digs and Madison Weese 21 assists.
Elkins, meanwhile, won its first match on Wednesday by dealing Lincoln a 25-12, 25-7, 25-20, setback to set up a semifinal matchup against Philip Barbour, which won by set scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-2.
Olivia Guire had seven kills in the win over Lincoln and two against the Lady Colts, while Kaitlynn Stone tallied six kills in both matches, Rumble Arbogast 10 set assists in the opener and five more in the semifinal.
Hannah Davis had four kills, Hannah Beam 14 set assists and Sara Collins eight kills against the Lady Cougars. Makylie Rinehart contributed three ace serves.
"It was a great season for us," Lady Tigers coach Penny Crawford said. "I can't express how proud I am of the girls and their play this season.
"We will certainly miss our seniors, but have a great group of juniors and younger players coming back."
