Lady Colts secure 20th straight state tourney birth

PHILIPPI -- The Philip Barbour volleyball team secured its 20th straight state tournament berth by cruising in Saturday's Region II tournament.

The host Lady Colts defeated section 1 runner-up Roane County 3-0 (25-6, 25-11, 25-17) in the semifinals, then knocked off Robert C. Byrd, 25-11, 25-6, 25-21, to win the title.

Philip Barbour had also defeated RCB, which defeated Lewis County in Saturday's other regional semifinal, in the sectional championship on Wednesday.

Both Philip Barbour and RCB will represent the Big 10 Conference in the state tournament that begins Friday at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

The Lady Colts (46-7-2) are the second seed and face No. 7 Frankfort at 1:30 p.m. Friday in quarterfinal play.

The Lady Flying Eagles are seeded sixth and meet No. 3 Herbert Hoover ion Friday afternoon.

The semifinals are set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, with the championship slated for Saturday.
