PB trio, Elkins’ Stone on Big 10 first team
Lady Bucs’ Currence also earns spot on conference’s top unit

PHILIPPI -- Class AA state champion Philip Barbour placed three players on the first team of All-Big 10 Conference volleyball squad.
Senior Alyssa Hill and juniors Emily Denison and Averi Carpenter earned spots on the first unit.
Hill recorded 420 kills, 72 ace serves and 96 blocks this season. Denison tallied 136 blocks and 378 kills and Carpenter 124 kills and 445 digs.
The Lady Colts captured their fifth state title in school history on Saturday afternoon, outlasting Shady Spring in five sets.
Elkins High School senior Kaitlynn Stone and Buckhannon-Upshur junior Kendal Currence also earned first-team laurels.
Stone helped lead the Lady Tigers to a 19-9 record and a spot in the sectional semifinals. She had 160 kills and 42 aces on the year.
Bridgeport's Violet Sickles and Robert C. Byrd's were named the league's co-Players of the Year, while RCB's Andrea Sturm was the Coach of the Year.
The remainder of the first team included Grafton's Payton Shreve, Bridgeport's Alexa Martin, RCB's Fran Alvaro and Liberty's Savanna Patterson and Gabby Floyd.
Elkins junior Olivia Guire, who recorded 201 kills this season, earned second-team honors, along with Philip Barbour freshman MacKenna Halfin (314 kills, 231 digs), B-U seniors Shelby McDaniels and Caroline Frye, East Fairmont's Blair Nuzum, Bridgeport's Jacey Lucas and Cambria Freeman, RCB's Emma Swiger, Grafton's Aniesa Taylor, Lewis County's Abby Hartley, Lincoln's Sydney McDougal and Preston's Emily Knotts.
RCB also represented the Big 10 in the Class AA state tournament, falling to Herbert Hoover in the semifinals. Bridgeport lost to Hedgesville in the Class AAA quarterfinals.
