ELKINS — Gracelin Corley netted a career-high 26 points to lead Elkins to a 54-44 win over Class A, No, 7 Webster County Tuesday night at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Corley, a sophomore guard, scored 16 of her game-high point total in the first half as the Lady Tigers led 17-9 after one quarter and 29-20 at the halftime break.

She also led Elkins with six rebounds and five steals.

The Lady Highlanders trailed by double digits early into the second quarter before senior guard Holly Perrine hit back-to-back 3-pointers to narrow the deficit to 19-15.

After the Lady Tigers pushed the lead back to seven, at 22-15, Sydney Baird drilled a trey to make it 22-18 with 4:10 left in the first half.

But Elkins ended the half on a 7-2 surge to carry a nine-point advantage into the intermission.

The Lady Tigers took the third frame, 13-12, and each team scored 12 markers in the final quarter.

Senior Anna Belan, an all-Big 10 Conference second-team selection last season, added 10 points and three steals in the win.

Junior Celia Ricottilli chipped in seven points, including a first-half 3-pointer. Sophomore Jaylen Florence added three blocked shots.

Baird, a returning all-state first-team selection and daughter of Elkins resident Ryan Baird, had 16 points and Perrine chipped in 11 markers to pace the Lady Highlanders.

Ryan Baird assists his wife and head coach, Sharon, on the Webster County staff.

Elkins will travel to another ranked Class A team — No. 3 Tucker County — at 7 :30 p.m. on Thursday.

Webster County will be idle until hosting Roane County next Tuesday.
