Elkins boys win Big 10 swim title

BRIDGEPORT -- A record-setting day by freshman Isaac Anger helped lead the Elkins High School boys to the Big 10 Conference title Saturday at the Bridgeport Sports Complex.

Anger set new Big 10 marks in both the 50 freestyle (22.29) and 100 breaststroke (59.98) as the Tigers tallied 166 points to get past Robert C. Byrd (162). B-U was third with 129 points and Philip Barbour seventh with 52 points among the eight-team field.

Luke Anger was second in the 100 butterfly (59.36), Charlie Smoak third in the 500 freestyle (6:06.92), Braxton Kenney and Andres Masten placed third (1:08.76) and fourth (1:19.47), respectively, in the 100 backstroke and Izaak Whetsell fourth in the 200 IM (2:46.66).

Kenney, Isaac Anger, Luke Anger and Smoak were runner-ups in the 200 medley relay (1:52.87), Luke Anger, Whetsell, Smoak and Isaac Anger third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.77) and Smoak, Whetsell, Kenney and Luke Anger fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:00.96).

B-U's Preston Bennett broke his own meet record in the 500 freestyle with an effort of 4:56.50. Bennett also claimed the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:49.76.

In the relay events, Reis Leonard, Owen Caynor, Carter Zuliani and Bennett took the 200 freestyle (1:37.48) and the same foursome was third in the 400 freestyle (3:44.64).

Zuliani posted a second-place effort in the 100 freestyle (53.89) and Leonard was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.32) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (56.44).

The Colts' Jayden Starks was third in the 100 butterfly (1:02.94).

Bridgeport took the girls team title with 203 points. Fairmont Senior (183) was second and B-U (174) third. Elkins (101) placed fifth and Philip Barbour fourth with 104 points out of the 10 teams entered.

Isabelle Judy placed fourth in the 100 breaststoke (1:17.55) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:30.83) for the Lady Tigers. She joined Joslyn DeWeese, Kaleigh Edwards and Ruby Jackson in finishing third in the 200 medley relay (2:09.79) and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:27.67).

DeWeese was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:11.41).

For B-U, Cadence Vincent captured the 50 freestyle (24.15) and 100 backstroke (57.78), while joining Riley Whitehair, Alayna Whitehair and Cameron Zuliani in winning the 200 medley relay in a meet-record time of 1:56.01 and the 200 freestyle in 1:44.24.

Zuliani also swam to first in the 100 freestyle (56.40) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.04), Whitehair was second in the 200 IM (2:21.72) and Riley Vincent fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:09.70) and fourth in the 50 freestyle (28.64).

Philip Barbour's MacKenna Halfin was third in the 50 freestyle (26.02) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (1:00.96) and Magnolia Shiflett second in the 100 backstroke (1:06.75)

Halfin and Shiflett also teamed with Raeanna Davis and Layna Grassi to place third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.67) and third in the 400 freestyle (4:20.37).
